“This award is a symbol that represents and reflects new perspectives I have encountered, the encouragement of family and friends, and the excellent mentorship of professors,” said the 21-year-old from Nashville. “The award portrays the success the community has co-created with me. I am thrilled to have received the award and appreciate all who have helped me along the journey.”
The University System of Georgia Academic Recognition Day Award is presented to the student who exemplifies outstanding academic achievement and success.
Nix was honored by University System of Georgia Chancellor Steve Wrigley, the Board of Regents, the Georgia House of Representatives, and the Georgia Senate on Academic Recognition Day in March.
During his time as a student at VSU, Nix was president of Phi Sigma Tau: International Honor Society in Philosophy, secretary of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Club, and a justice for the Student Government Association Judicial Council. He participated in research projects with the Honors College and Students Against Violating the Environment.
A regular on the Dean’s List, Nix was the recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Student in Philosophy and Religious Studies Award and 2016 Outstanding Student in Philosophy Award. He won first place for Best Paper in Humanities at the 2014 Georgia Collegiate Honors Council Conference.
Nix graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religious studies and a Bachelor of Arts in legal assistant studies on May 6. He plans to attend Mercer University School of Law in the fall, where he has received the Mercer Lawyer Scholarship. The distinguished honor amounts to a total of $102,000. In the future, he would like to work as an attorney in South Georgia.
Nix is the son of Darlene Nix of Jacksonville.
