Miranda Culbreth Honored with President’s Award for Academic Excellence at Valdosta State University

VALDOSTA — Miranda René Culbreth of Valdosta, Georgia, is the recipient of the Spring 2017 President’s Award for Academic Excellence for the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services at Valdosta State University.

The President’s Award for Academic Excellence is presented to the graduating student with the highest grade point average in each of VSU’s five colleges — College of Arts and Sciences, College of the Arts, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration, and James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services.

VSU will celebrate its 223^rd commencement on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6.

Culbreth will serve as the official banner carrier for the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services during the undergraduate commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, on the VSU Front Lawn. She will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education in early childhood education.

“I am honored and thrilled to be leading my fellow graduates into commencement on this special day to celebrate our achievements at Valdosta State University,” she said.

During her time as a student at VSU, Culbreth regularly achieved Dean’s List status and served as an ambassador for the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services, a mentor with the Next Step Major Mentor Program, and an active member of Kappa Delta Pi: International Honor Society in Education, Golden Key International Honour Society, Sigma Alpha Lambda: National Leadership and Honors Organization, and Alpha Lambda Delta: National Honor Society for First-Year Students. 

Culbreth’s commitment to academic and service excellence on campus, in the community, and around the world resulted in her earning the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services Deserving Student Scholarship, the VSU Alumni Association Endowment Scholarship for Legacy Students, and the Melvene D. Hardee Scholarship.

Culbreth will attend the Georgia Teacher Conservation Workshop this summer and further her education in the field of science. She plans to teach at an elementary school in her hometown area this fall.

“Teaching is my passion, and I am excited to see where it takes me throughout my career,” said the daughter of Neal and Angie Culbreth. “My goal is to empower children in education and to teach them to follow their dreams.”
