VALDOSTA – The Office of Career Opportunities at Valdosta State University will host a Department of State: General Foreign Service Information Session on Monday, March 7, in Powell Hall West. Students are invited to attend.

From 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Michael Thurston, senior foreign service officer and diplomat in residence for the United States Department of State, will “explain the mission of the Department of State’s Foreign Service — to promote peace, support prosperity, and protect American citizens while advancing the interests of the U.S. abroad,” said Delois Hargett, employer relations coordinator in the Office of Career Opportunities. “Those wanting to have an impact on the world need to attend this session. He will explain the opportunity of a career unlike any other while working and experiencing cultures, customs, and people of different nations.”

The United States Department of State — often referred to as the State Department — is the United States federal executive department responsible for international relations equivalent to the foreign ministry of other countries, said Hargett. The Department was created in 1789 and was the first executive department established.
