Zachary Broussard, Christina Burgess Crowned Homecoming King, Queen

VALDOSTA — Zachary L. Broussard and Christina N. Burgess are Valdosta State University’s Homecoming 2015 king and queen. Elected by their peers, the two were crowned during halftime festivities at Saturday’s game against the Florida Institute of Technology Panthers — a game the Blazers won 39-21.   

“Having the title of homecoming king is just another reminder of how God has truly blessed me in my life,” said Broussard. “I owe any accomplishments to Him and to Him alone.” 

As a member of the Blazer Nation family, Broussard has served as president, vice president, chaplain, and social chairman of the Beta Tau Chapter of The Honor Society of Pi Kappa Phi. He has also volunteered his time to introduce mentally and/or physically challenged children to America’s favorite pastime — baseball — by taking them to a VSU baseball game or helping them play their own game through The Miracle League of Valdosta.

“… I was raised the right way by my beautiful mother,” said the 24-year-old son of Belinda Broussard of Woodstock. “She has always wanted me to be a leader and a positive role model to those around me. Being elected king means that I’m someone that people look up to, that I’m in a leadership role, which I know makes her extremely happy.”

Broussard plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing in December. His dream is to work in sales or marketing for the Atlanta Hawks, Braves, or Falcons and eventually land a management position with one of the organizations.  

Burgess is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at VSU, and even though she does not anticipate graduating before December 2016, she is already thinking about her next step — earning a Master of Science in Nursing and becoming a nurse practitioner.  She is an active member of the Kappa Beta Chapter of Phi Mu, where she most recently served as recruitment chairwoman and earned the title of highest grade point average during her freshman year. This fall she completed nearly 100 community service hours, nearly seven times more than that required by her sorority, and she is a regular on the Dean's List.  

“I never in a million years thought that I would have the honor to represent my sorority on homecoming court,” said the 21-year-old daughter of Darryl and Joyce Burgess of Milledgeville. “Never did I think that people would actually choose someone like me to represent our university. Standing on the field and hearing my name announced as VSU's homecoming queen is something I will never forget. Not only is it my senior year in my chapter, but it is also Phi Mu's 50th anniversary at Valdosta State. The best thing about being crowned queen was that I was able to make not only my chapter but also our alumni proud to be a Phi Mu lady. What a perfect celebration of 50 years. I am so thankful to be a part of such an amazing university, sorority, and family that supports me in everything I do.”
