VSU Welcomes Sundance Film Festival Aficionado

VALDOSTA — Gareth Jones of Wesleyan College in Macon will share his knowledge of and enthusiasm for the Sundance Film Festival with the Valdosta State University community at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, in Mass Media Building Room 1001. This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Hosted by the VSU Mass Media Program and titled “Sundance: History, Significance, and How To Get Involved,” Jones’s presentation will provide a look at how the “most important” film festival in the United States originated in Park City, Utah, and he will share with VSU students the many ways they can get involved with the annual event, noted Jason E. Brown, assistant professor of mass media. All those in attendance will have an opportunity to ask questions and to view “shorts” from the festival.

Jones has worked with the Sundance Film Festival in various capacities for well over a decade, most recently in logistics. He holds a master’s degree in screenwriting and film studies from Hollins University in Roanoke, Va. He serves as director of student success at Wesleyan College, where he also teaches film-related courses. He previously worked at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon.

Since its inception 30 years ago, the Sundance Film Festival’s objective has been to bring “the most original storytellers together with the most adventurous audiences for … (a) program of dramatic and documentary films, shorts, New Frontier films, installations, performances, panel discussions, and dynamic music events.” Many of the films launched at the festival have gone on to receive critical acclaim, as well as commercial distribution.
