Dr. Jones Leads Science Field Trip with Area Students April 25

VALDOSTA – For Dr. Leslie S. Jones, associate professor of biology at Valdosta State University, certain aspects of biology and earth science are best taught in nature. With this in mind Jones will lead a field trip with more than 100 kindergarten students to Pine Grove Farm Friday, April 25.

The trip will include short hikes throughout the farm where Clyattville Elementary School students can examine the Withlacoochee River and its flood plain, natural hardwood forest, pine plantations, lakes, marshes and a beaver dam.

“This trip will show them many things about natural environments and other environments that have been created in that area,” said Jones. “The students will be bussed in, have sack lunches and have time for play.”

Jones is joined in this outreach project by Nancy Sartin, early childhood and special education instructor at VSU and former elementary school teacher who helped develop teaching curriculum to be used during the trip.

“This field trip is consistent with goals outlined within the university’s strategic plan as well as the College of Art and Sciences STEM outreach initiative,” said Jones, who seeks to develop and maintain partnerships with K-12 teachers and students and pique their interest in STEM fields.

“We are in the process of recruiting VSU students, particularly science or education majors, to help chaperone and work with the students during the trip,” Jones added.

Students who are interested in volunteering should contact Jones at lesliesj@valdosta.edu .
