Spotlighters Bring a Little ‘Cool Yule’ to VSU

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State University Spotlighters will present “Cool Yule,” an evening of sweet treats, brewed coffee, and holiday favorites, at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in the University Center Magnolia Room. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students.

Dr. Paul A. Neal, director of choral studies at VSU, said, “If you enjoy the old holiday songs of Mel Torme and Bing Crosby, but you also enjoy the new a cappella sounds of Straight No Chaser and Pentatonix, then don’t miss this show.”

The VSU Spotlighters are Rachel Campbell, Bria Harrison, Erin Walsh, Chandler Clark, Kiara Walker, Gabrielle Ford, Nathan Calvert, Kevin Jackson, Antoine Bray, Lee Hillmon, Ben Watson, and Issa Young. They will sing “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” “Believe,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Silent Night,” “Carol of the Bells,” “Grown-Up Christmas List,” and more.

Proceeds from “Cool Yule” will benefit the VSU Chamber Singers’ musical journey through Historic England during the week of Spring Break, March 14-22, 2014. The premiere auditioned choral group will perform the highest level of choral music in such towns as Staffordshire, Oxford, and London.

During the nine-day performance tour, Neal said that the students will share their talents at Oxford’s Christ Church and during a music concert series at Stoke Minster in Stoke-On-Trent. The group will also visit Manchester Cathedral, Christ Church College, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace to view the Changing of the Guard ceremony, and more. He said that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the group, which includes both music and non-music majors.
