VSU Continuing Education Now Offering Summer Programs for Adults
VALDOSTA — For the first time in five years, Valdosta State University Continuing Education is offering summer programs for adult learners.
Sue Bailey, program coordinator, said that two things led VSU Continuing Education to try offering some adult classes this summer, in addition to the usual summertime lineup of Camp Discovery activities for kids and swimming lessons for all ages.
“One was that we had a number of requests from adults for summer offerings,” she explained. “The other was that my instructor who could no longer offer The Joy of Singing during our spring and fall semesters due to scheduling conflicts asked if we could try it during the summer. I said, ‘Yes!’ And we have 12 people registered for The Joy of Singing with Ronda Paoletti.”
The Joy of Singing kicked off on June 13.
Bailey said that there is still space available for anyone who wants to attend the one-day Japanese Braided Jewelry Workshop and learn the basics of kumihimo, which is an ancient art form that creates beautiful cords from fibers or fibers and beads. This class will meet from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, July 1.
Fundamentals of Digital Photography, “which was a class that was requested by several people,” Bailey said, will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on four consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 10. Attendees will learn about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, color temperature, megapixels, and lenses — all the necessary skills for taking better pictures.
“I have also been collaborating with Employee and Organizational Development to offer some of the VSU employee training programs to the public for a fee,” she noted. “This summer we are offering Building a Team and Motivating Your Workforce.” This class will meet from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10.
All those interested in taking a personal enrichment class at VSU are encouraged to register early.
Classes will be canceled three days prior to start dates if, at that time, there is not sufficient enrollment to cover costs, noted Continuing Education staff members.
All classes will meet in the Regional Center for Continuing Education, located at 903 N. Patterson St., unless otherwise noted in the course description.
VSU Continuing Education’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in the region by providing educational, artistic, cultural, technological, and economic development activities and programs. It works to develop and present programs and activities for professional and personal enrichment of community persons.
