Matthew Carter Joins College of Education Faculty

VALDOSTA — Dr. Matthew Carter, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., recently joined the faculty of Valdosta State University’s College of Education. The 32-year-old is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Carter chose to teach at VSU because he wanted the opportunity to grow as both a professional and an academic. During the fall semester, he is teaching CSD 4070: Introduction to Fluency Disorders and CSD 5040: Fluency Disorders.

A baseball and outdoor enthusiast, Carter, who prefers to be called Matt, earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington and a Master of Science in speech, language, and auditory pathology from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. In October, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in communication sciences and disorders from East Carolina University.

Carter’s chosen areas of professional research include reading disorders, language disorders, and fluency disorders; he has published some of his findings in journals and plans to publish more. He is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech pathology, and has presented at several national conventions and university-based research symposiums.

Carter and his wife, Melissa, have two children, daughter Kennedy and son Brooks.
