Jason Brown Joins College of the Arts Faculty

VALDOSTA — Jason Brown, 38, arrived at Valdosta State University with a wealth of experience in producing both television and film and in journalism. His recent film, “Miracle Boy,” celebrated its world premier at the Venice Film Festival in Italy in September.

“I had been looking for a position in the Southeast at a growing school with a substantial department where I could teach beyond the basics of mass communications into the new opportunities that are being created,” said the West Virginia native and assistant professor in the College of the Arts. “The Mass Media Area in the Department of Communication Arts here at VSU has grown to be a vibrant group of professors who are not only empowering students but are producing great work for the world to see — and who wouldn’t want to be part of that?”

Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication arts from Concord University in West Virginia in 1997, a Master of Arts in screenwriting and film studies from Hollins University in Virginia in 2004, and a Master of Fine Arts in film and video production from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2008. His teaching experience includes positions at Lander University, Bowling Green State University, McNeese State University, West Virginia State University, and his alma maters. He has worked as a producer, director, writer, and/or editor on more than a dozen productions and served in various capacities at a number of film festivals.

During the fall semester, Brown is teaching MDIA 3120: TV Studio Production, MDIA 3400: Broadcast Scriptwriting, MDIA 4100: Media Economics, and MDIA 4962: Video Workshop. His Video Workshop class has produced a television program that features independent filmmakers, trailers from their films, and information about the growing outlets for video on demand services. VOD Indie airs at 11 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday on Mediacom Channel 20.

Brown’s area of professional focus is on growing indigenous filmmakers in underdeveloped areas.

“While many states and countries have instituted incentives to bring Hollywood productions to town, some communities are using their resources to support local filmmakers to tell local stories,” he said.
