VSU Jazz Ensemble Performs Tuesday

VALDOSTA -- Directed by David Springfield, the Valdosta State University Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Whitehead Auditorium. Admission is free of charge.

The program features “Once Around” by Thad Jones, “Sedentary Motion” by Tom Garling, “Oblivion” by Astor Piazzolla, “Quick Step” by Bill Holman, “Spring Song” by Pete McGuinness, “Sky Blue” by Maria Schneider, and “Greetings and Salutations” by Thad Jones. The Schneider piece will feature Dr. Joren Cain, assistant professor of saxophone at VSU.

Jazz Ensemble members are:

Saxophone -- Fernando Chavez (alto and soprano and lead), Landan Frazier (alto), Nick Johnson (tenor), Emmanuel Johnson (tenor), Shiree Williams (baritone)

Trumpet -- Brian Summerlin (lead), Sage Khan, Brittany Loftin, Eduardo Farias

Trombone -- Brian Dodd (lead), Jacob Johnson, Josh Watford, Zach Jones (bass)

Rhythm -- John Neely (guitar), Jessica Holmes (piano), Trent Harper (bass), Anthony Bussey (drums), Travis King (drums)

VSU’s Department of Music is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. It boasts a faculty of active performers, scholars, conductors, clinicians, and adjudicators throughout the region and offers a range of instrumental and vocal performing ensembles, open to all university students.

The Department of Music presents over 200 musical performances for the public each year. Upcoming events include a faculty chamber recital at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, a student recital at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, and a faculty recital at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30.

Whitehead Auditorium is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building, which is located at the intersection Brookwood Drive and Patterson Street.
