VSU Art Faculty Exhibition Opens Monday

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University will celebrate the start of another year of students and teachers expressing their creativity with an Art Faculty Exhibition.

Sponsored by Hester and Morris Orthodontics, an opening reception for the Faculty Exhibition will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20, in the Fine Arts Gallery. The Jazz Combo, featuring seven Jazz Studies faculty members playing bass, piano, saxophone, drums, trumpet, trombone, and guitar, will perform.

“This is the show where the Department of Art faculty demonstrate to students that we practice what we preach,” said Julie Bowland, art professor and Fine Arts Gallery director, as well as noted landscape painter. “We not only talk the talk but walk the walk. It’s a nice way to welcome faculty and students back to classes.”

Bowland added that full-time faculty members in the university’s Department of Art were invited to participate in the annual exhibit. Art enthusiasts will find “a little bit of everything” in this exhibit, she noted, from paintings and drawings to animation video and photography to ceramics and found object sculpture to “some things quite indefinable” -- created by Hollis Barnett, Clyde L. Edwards, Dr. Bradley “Brad” A. Finson, Dominick Gheesling, Craig Hawkins, Jim Hornsby, Dr. J. Stephen Lahr, Dr. Paula McNeill, Dr. Selena Nawrocki, Al Park, Blake Pearce, Michael T. Schmidt, Kalina Winska, and Bowland.

Following Monday’s reception, the Art Faculty Exhibit will be open to the university and to the community from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays through Friday, Sept. 7.

VSU’s Fine Arts Gallery is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street.
