VSU English Department Essay Contest Winners Announced

VALDOSTA -- The VSU English Department has announced three winners of the 2012 English Department Essay Contest. This contest is conducted each spring and is open to all students enrolled in composition and world literature classes. Students in these classes are encouraged to submit their best work in each category. The contest awards $100 to the winner in three categories: Best Personal Essay, Best Researched Essay and Best Literary Analysis Essay.

The winner for Best Personal Essay is Tristan Flagg. His descriptive essay, “Motherless Misery,” details the search for understanding the implications of his mother’s death and his own future.

Caleb Jarrett’s essay, “Fishing,” won Best Researched Essay. Jarrett focuses on the intangible lessons learned during his many “pleasurable” battles with the creatures of the mysterious water world.

The Best Literary Analysis award was presented to Erica Garcia for her essay, “Women as Partners in The Odyssey and The Aeneid.” In her analysis, Erica explains the relationship between mortal and immortal women in as they impact the heroes’ journeys in each of these works.
