Kids Invited to Participate in Discovery Saturdays at VSU

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University Continuing Education will host Discovery Saturdays, an opportunity for boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 8 to get out of the house and learn something new.

Suzanne Ewing, program coordinator, said Discovery Saturdays has three different day camps from which kids can choose. Each one will meet from 9 a.m. to noon on three Saturdays -- Feb. 18, Feb. 25, and March 3.

Awesome Artists is perfect for kids who love to draw and paint. Participants will learn simple techniques to create artwork using oil pastel, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic paints. The cost is $85.

LEGO Junior is for those kids who like to build things and use their imagination. All camp participants will build towers, castles, and more using LEGO blocks. There will be group projects, challenges, and competitions, as well as plenty of time for kids to build something original. Campers will even get to take their own set of LEGO blocks home. The cost is $95.

Survivor VSU is ideal for kids who want to learn how to work together as a team while competing in relay races, trivia games, an obstacle course, and much more. This camp will involve lots of activity, but no one will be voted out. The cost is $80.

Each camp is limited to 20 participants.

“We anticipate that they may fill up, so parents will want to sign their children up early,” Ewing said.

VSU Continuing Education decided to host Discovery Saturdays at the request of area parents who wanted activities for their kids during the school year, not just during the summer.

When asked how VSU Continuing Education selected the themes for Discovery Saturdays, Ewing said, “All three of these topics filled up as summer camps, and we wanted to give more kids a chance to benefit from the programs. We are concentrating on the younger age group because we have found there is more demand for organized activities for them.”

Families who are unable to participate in Discovery Saturdays are encouraged to contact VSU Continuing Education to learn more about Camp Discovery, which runs weekdays in June and July each year and offers a host of fun and educational day camps for kids ages 5 and up.

VSU Continuing Education’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in the region by providing educational, artistic, cultural, technological, and economic development activities and programs. It works to develop and present programs and activities for professional and personal enrichment of community persons.
