Two Days Left to Enjoy Senior Art Exhibition at VSU

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University’s Fall 2011 Senior Art Exhibition will come to an end on Monday, Dec. 5, leaving art enthusiasts who have not had the chance to visit the Fine Arts Gallery since the show opened only two days to do so.

Titled “Drawing a [_____], the show features a selection of works from 11 VSU students graduating with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art on Saturday, Dec. 10. The students are Cierra Bledsoe, Justin Brown, Rachel Fretti, Feartatious Hogan, Boone Holton, Aliyah Jones, Anna Klapp, Chad McLeroy, Elsie Miles, Colleen Reilly, and Whitney Watson.

Julie Bowland, Fine Arts Gallery director and associate professor in the Department of Art, said each participating student selected the pieces he or she wanted to be featured in the show. The number of works varies for each student, and the styles include everything from paintings, prints, and photographs to drawings, sculpture, and more.

The Senior Art Exhibition is held at the end of fall and spring semesters. Its purpose is to exhibit the graduating art major’s “most developed and mature art from their tenure in the program,” Bowland said. “Art is made to be seen and the exhibition is the culmination of all their creative efforts.”

The participating students install the show, produce a catalog, mount a reception, and do the publicity, she added.

Bowland said that to successfully graduate from VSU with a degree in art, students “must be doggedly committed, determined, very hardworking, and have true artistic vision and confidence in themselves as artists. That said, it is a terrific and colorful show that is wonderfully exhibited by the student exhibition committee.”

Located in the Fine Arts Building on the corner of East Brookwood Drive and North Oak Street, VSU’s Fine Arts Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. This show is open to the public.
