Dr. Karla Hull Named Dean of the Dewar College of Education
VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University announces the appointment
of Dr. Karla Hull as dean of the Dewar College of Education. Hull
has served as the interim dean since July 2011.
“Dr. Hull has provided excellent leadership at Valdosta State,”
said Interim President Louis H. Levy. “Her expertise will help
guide the Dewar College of Education in new and exciting
directions.”
With more than 30 years of experience in higher education as
faculty member and administrator, Hull has served in various
leadership capacities during her 15 years at VSU including Interim
Dean of the Graduate School and Assistant Vice President of
Research from 2008 to 2011; head of the Department of Early
Childhood and Special Education from 2007 to 2008; and head of the
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders from
2003-2007.
“I appreciate the role of the search committee in recommending Dr.
Hull for the position. We are pleased to have an accomplished
scholar and leader serving in this important position,” said
Provost Phil Gunter. “Dr. Hull’s prior accomplishments at Valdosta
State were a factor in her appointment. She will continue to serve
the mission of the Dewar College of Education and help the
university’s outreach efforts within the regional public school
systems.”
While at VSU, Hull has helped secure more than $3 million in state
and federal grants. She also helped to implement the Quality
Enhanced Plan (QEP), which was developed as part of the
university’s reaccreditation from the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges. The QEP works
to promote undergraduate engagement in disciplined-based
inquiry.
“I am honored to serve as Dean of the Dewar College of Education.
Together with the faculty, staff and administration I will embrace
the challenge of providing excellent teacher and professional
preparation to our students, while partnering with our community to
improve the educational outcomes for all students and clients,”
said Hull. “I am committed to ensuring that the faculty and
students in the Dewar College of Education have a positive impact
on our community and region, through our service, partnerships and
research. Together we can prepare excellent professionals and serve
the needs of our local schools, clinics and allied health care
providers.”
Hull received her bachelor’s degree in communication disorders and
master’s in speech/language pathology from Arizona State
University; and a Ed.D. in educational leadership and policy
studies from the University of Vermont.
The Dewar College of Education is accredited by the National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and offers
undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees within seven academic
departments including Adult and Career Education; Communication
Sciences and Disorders; Curriculum, Leadership and Technology;
Early Childhood and Special Education; Kinesiology and Physical
Education; Middle, Secondary , Reading and Deaf Education; and
Psychology and Counseling.
