Ruptured Gas Pipe Causes Street Closing
Valdosta, GA -- At approximately 3:45pm today, a gas line was
breached at South Georgia Medical Center. At 4:54 pm, it was
reported that the gas line had been capped.
The gas line was ruptured when an excavator used in the parking
deck construction hit it. No injuries have been reported. SGMC
implemented its life safety practices, cleared the area and
notified authorities.
Because of the breach, the City of Valdosta's Engineering
Department rerouted traffic.
Gas service to SGMC was not affected by the breach because the
hospital is served by two natural gas feeds.
"The City of Valdosta and the Atlanta Gas Light Company were
quickly on the scene and worked cooperatively to plug the line,"
said Community Relations Director Laura Love.

A gas leak near the new tower construction site of South Georgia
Medical Center has required the city’s Engineering Department to
detour traffic for the public’s safety. Until further notice, all
northbound traffic on N. Patterson Street will be detoured to
Woodrow Wilson Drive and all southbound traffic on N. Patterson
Street will be detoured to Pendleton Drive.
Emergency repair crews estimate the repairs will take an hour
minimum. The detours will remain in effect until the repairs can be
accomplished.
