It is a Deaf, Deaf World on Friday, Oct. 28

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University’s American Sign Language Club will host two sessions of Deaf, Deaf World from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, in the Student Union Ballrooms B and C. Deaf, Deaf World is a unique cultural experience, where faculty, staff and students can learn about Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.

“Deaf, Deaf World is an amazing event that opens peoples’ eyes to the world of deaf culture and to anyone that may use a different language,” Erin Salmon, coordinator for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, said. “Using a different language in no way means someone is ‘less than’ it just means you have to figure out another way of communicating, and that can be a true challenge to mainstream society.”

The ballrooms will transform into Deaf, Deaf World, where individuals are not allowed to communicate vocally and must rely on their own nonverbal communication skills to engage in everyday tasks like going to restaurants and banks. This eye-opening experience will offer a glimpse into what day-to-day life is like for people with minimal to no hearing.

There will be a panel discussion with individuals from the deaf and hard of hearing community at the end of each session. Members will answer questions and talk with participants about what they learned from interacting in the Deaf, Deaf World experience.
