VSU Student Appointed to National Radio Board
VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University senior Daniel Oakes has
been named the student representative to the College Broadcasters
Inc. (CBI) National Board of Directors for 2011.
The senior mass media major will represent students involved at CBI
member stations. His responsibilities include monitoring
information technology developments to ensure they are responsible
to student interests; seeking ways to help develop student friendly
initiatives; preparing a monthly station member spotlight for the
CBI web site; and attending the national convention.
Oakes has worked at WVVS, VSU’s student radio station, for several
years and is currently the station manager. He is the son of Donald
and Cynthia Oakes, of Kingsland, Ga., and plans to graduate in Dec.
2011 with a bachelor’s degree in mass media.
“I’m excited to represent the student voice for college student on
a national level,” said Oakes. “I look forward to talking to and
working with campuses across the country in any and all matters
relating to collegiate media.”
Michael Taylor, faculty adviser for WVVS, encouraged Oakes to apply
for the board position and applauds his enthusiasm and leadership
skills.
“Daniel has been an excellent station manager for WVVS,” said
Taylor. “He makes very good use of his officers’ talents --
delegating authority gracefully while following up effectively --
and maintains very efficient communication with the volunteer
student staff. In the 16 years that I’ve served as WVVS’s advisor,
Daniel is in the top three of station managers with whom I’ve
worked. He is a pleasure to advise and guide since he works through
ideas and problems and then seeks advice on solutions rather than
just looking for answers.”
CBI represents students involved in radio, television, webcasting
and other related media ventures. The organization ensures a
commitment to education and the student pursuit of excellence
through active involvement in electronic media; promotes
cooperative efforts between the association and other national,
regional, and state media organizations; facilitates the discussion
of issues related to student-operated electronic media; and other
community oriented programs.
