Award-Winning Author to Visit VSU

VALDOSTA -- Award-winning Author Allison Joseph will visit Valdosta State University’s campus Wednesday, Feb. 23 to Saturday, Feb. 26.

During her visit Joseph will speak to several literature classes about issues in poetry, contemporary literature, professional editing and cultural diversity. She will also hold a master workshop and provide manuscript consultations.

“Allison offers a unique perspective for our students since she touches on so many poetic traditions,” said Dr. Marty Williams, a professor in the English Department. “She was born in England and her parents in the Caribbean, so she weaves multiple traditions into her work as a poet and editor. Our students can definitely benefit from her experience and her knowledge, and, as a person, she sparkles with positive energy.”

Joseph will share some of her personal writings on Thursday, Feb. 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the University Center Magnolia Room. This event is free and open to the public.

Joseph is the author of five poetry books. She directs the Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing at Southern Illinois University. She serves as poetry editor of the university’s publication, Crab Orchard Review, and director of the Young Writers Workshop, an annual summer conference and residential creative writing workshop for high school writers.
