University Celebrates 2010 Homecoming Sept. 30-Oct. 3
VALDOSTA--Valdosta State University will celebrate homecoming Sept. 30 - Oct. 3, with a number of activities for students, alumni and members of the community. During the annual event, Felicia Norwood will be honored as the 2010 Distinguished Alumna of the Year. The following schedule lists the weekend’s highlights:
THURSDAY, SEPT. 30
Community Pep Rally
VSU’s football head coach David Dean will address the crowd during the community pep rally at 7 p.m. in the P.E. Complex, on the corner of Sustella Avenue and Patterson Street. The evening activities will include performances by the VSU cheerleaders and Red Hots, special recognition of the senior members of the Blazer football team, and a lively and entertaining lip sync contest.
FRIDAY, OCT. 1
Alumni Golf Tournament
Beautiful Stone Creek Golf Club is the site for this year’s annual golf tournament. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. for this four-person scramble, with a 9 a.m. shotgun shot. The tournament is open to all VSU alumni and friends. Participants will receive lunch and an assortment of prizes will be given away. Pre-registration is required, golfers must call the Office of Alumni Relations at (229) 333-5797 to register no later than Monday, Sept. 27. Cost is $75 per person or $300 per team of four.
Homecoming Parade,
Show your Blazer pride and join your friends on Patterson Street for the parade, which begins at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Woodrow Wilson Drive and Patterson Street, and will head south to conclude at Brookwood Drive. Former VSU President Dr. Hugh Bailey and his wife, Joan, will serve as this year’s grand marshals.
Front Lawn Concert
The public is invited to attend the front lawn concert featuring singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw. The concert begins with special guest Ocean Street at 7 p.m. Guests can come early and enjoy a variety of family activities. The event is free and open to the public.
SATURDAY, OCT. 2
Alumni Tailgating
Tailgating activities for alumni will take place from 11 a.m. to 1p.m., at the Student Union courtyard, located at the intersection of Oak Street and Baytree Road. Those interested in participating should register online at http://www.valdostastate.org or by call the Office of Alumni Relations at (229) 333-5797.
Blazer Walk
Show your school spirit by cheering on the Blazers as they enter Bazemore-Hyder Stadium prior to the game against Ouachita Baptist. Starting at 1:30 p.m., the football team and cheerleading squad will walk from Ann Street down Williams Street on their way to the stadium.
Blazers vs. Ouachita Baptist
Blazer football takes on Ouachita Baptist at 3 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Tickets are available online at http://www.vstateblazers.com/ticket-office/index.htm or call the ticket office at (229) 333-SEAT (7328). VSU fans are encouraged to stop by the main stadium entrance to trade in a T-shirt representing another university or college to receive a free VSU shirt. At halftime, the university will announce the homecoming court and recognize Felicia Norwood, Distinguished Alumna of the Year, ’81, who is currently president of Mid-America Region for Aetna, Inc. http://www.valdosta.edu/news/releases/norwood.082310 .
