Hurricane Preparation Tips

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University's Department of Environmental and Occupational Safety (EOS) encourages faculty, staff and students to prepare for a potentially active hurricane season and watch the VSU website for updates regarding severe weather.

For the 2010 hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30, the National Weather Service predicts 15 storms with eight hurricanes, four of which may be category 3 or higher. EOS regularly monitors weather forecasts from the National Weather Service and other weather outlets for any possible hazardous weather that might impact the campus.

In the event of severe weather, the status of VSU operations is communicated primarily through the VSU Campus Alert System, main university website and e-mail. The Campus Alert System is the emergency notification method that Valdosta State University uses to notify students, faculty and staff who are registered for the Campus Alert System. The system will send out an e-mail (VSU e-mail accounts) and phone message (to registered phone numbers) and a text message (if opted to receive).

To register or check your Campus Alert System status go to http://www.valdosta.edu/vsu/editalertinfo/ and follow the instructions. All faculty, staff and students are advised to register their phone numbers and contact information with VSU’s Campus Alert System to receive emergency updates.

In the event of the loss of electrical power on campus, every effort will be made to communicate through local and statewide news media outlets and through the University System Web page.

All members of the VSU community, especially those who have been away in such places as the Atlanta area or other locations during a weekend or holiday where weather conditions may be different than in Valdosta, should use their best judgment concerning traveling to or from the VSU campus during such a weather emergency or threatening situation.

Environmental safety offers the following tips about severe summer weather:

* Have a family disaster plan in place that includes: a three-day supply of water, nonperishable food and bottled water; one blanket or sleeping bag and pillow per person; a first aid kit, including prescription medicines; emergency tools including a battery powered weather radio and a portable radio, flashlight and extra batteries; an extra set of car keys; a credit card or cash; and special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members.
* Learn evacuation routes and prepare an evacuation plan.
* Review your insurance policies for protection against wind and flood damage.

* Complete inventory of personal property for insurance settlements and/or tax deduction for loses. List descriptions and take pictures.
* Store important papers in waterproof containers.
