VSU Launches New Advising Program
VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University recently launched
DegreeWorks, an electronic advising tool that monitors and assists
in advising and enrollment management functions. The Web-based
system provides an easy and accessible method for students to
monitor their course requirements for graduation and allows for
greater time management and accuracy in the advising process.
“DegreeWorks is a powerful tool for helping adviser and students
monitor progress towards a degree” said Dr. Louis Levy, provost and
vice president for Academic Affairs. “The software also allows the
students to determine the consequences of changing their major or
altering their schedule of classes.”
Departments and colleges may create a standard four-year plan that
applies to all students within the major, while still allowing
flexibility in setting individual student goals. The planning
component allows for enhanced scheduling options and greater
enrollment management opportunities.
“Along with the two-year schedule of course offerings, this
software permits students to plan their schedules and to reduce the
number of scheduling mistakes,” Levy said. “At the university
level, DegreeWorks will allow us to promote an efficient array of
courses each semester.”
Alicia Roberson, academic adviser at the Student Success Center,
said the first year will serve as a test process. Students, faculty
and staff are encouraged to attend scheduled training sessions and
provide feedback.
Faculty training sessions are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on
Sept. 2 and 4 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 3. General training sessions for
students are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sept. 8 and 4 p.m.
to 5 p.m. on Sept. 9. All training sessions will take place in room
3270 of the Odum Library. Additional faculty training will be
scheduled within individuals departments.
