AAUW Hosts Sister-To-Sister March 28
VALDOSTA - The American Association of University Women will
host the 12th Annual Sister-to-Sister Summit from 9 a.m. until 5
p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the University Center on Valdosta State
University campus.
Each year, approximately 100 middle school girls from Lowndes and
Brooks counties participate in the full-day mentor program aimed at
promoting self-esteem and moral values by giving young girls the
tools needed to find solutions to their problems. This year’s event
will focus on peer pressure and street smarts as well as academic
topics like math, science and astronomy. Those in attendance will
receive a free t-shirt and goody bag and will also have the
opportunity to participate in activities like dancing and campus
tours.
“The goal is to address issues that impact the lives of middle
school girls, yet cannot be covered under curriculum at most
schools,” said Beatriz Potter, Valdosta AAUW president, who added
the event wouldn’t be possible without support from local
individuals, community organizations and VSU. “These young women
are our future and the nurturing provided in programs such as this
helps them grow into productive and successful leaders.”
University attorney and AAUW member Laverne Gaskins will speak to
the group during a special luncheon and the Victory Over Violence
exhibit will be on display throughout the day. Part of a national
movement, VOV highlights the teachings of nonviolent leaders,
including Mohandas Gandhi, who was often quoted as saying, “passive
violence fuels the fire of physical violence.”
The free annual event prepares adolescent girls to be vocal
leaders, to ensure their rights are observed and to make certain
they have equal opportunities in all arenas of life. Since 1881,
the AAUW has promoted equity for all women, lifelong education and
positive societal change. It is the oldest national organization
for the advancement of women.
