VSU AFROTC Hosts High School Drill Meet Saturday, Feb. 21

VALDOSTA - VSU’s Air Force ROTC will host the Blazer Invitational Junior ROTC Drill Meet for Junior ROTC cadets from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb 21, at the Rea and Lillian Steele North Campus.

Almost 300 cadets from eight schools in Georgia and Florida will compete in individual drill, armed drill, color guard, unarmed regulation drill and exhibition. VSU’s cadet core has planned the entire event and spokesperson Cadet Shannon King said she expects the day, which includes competition, judging, awards and refreshments, to run smoothly.

“We’re always excited about the Blazer Invitational Junior ROTC Drill Meet. It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase VSU, Air Force ROTC and our community,” Capt. Tim Bazzle, “This year will be slightly larger than last year, giving students from eight high schools in Georgia and Florida a first-hand look at what Valdosta has to offer.”

The event should bring hundreds into the Valdosta area, providing an opportunity to showcase the ROTC program, the university and Valdosta-Lowndes area.

“This is a great opportunity for the public to witness our future Air Force leaders’ talents and abilities, while having a good time with family and friends on a beautiful Saturday afternoon,” said Cadet Christopher Lee, who is in charge of the event's publicity. “Perhaps it will even inspire our younger generations to serve in our country’s military.”

Saturday’s ROTC drill meet is free and open to the public with food and beverages on sale. E-mail Cadet King at ssking@valdosta.edu or call the detachment 172 office at (229) 333-5954.
