Hurricane Season

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, and Visitors, as hurricane season nears the National Weather Service NOAA is predicting 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, of which three could become major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. The hurricane season began June 1 and continues through November 30. There are 19 counties in Georgia that are at particular risk to hurricanes, these include, Brooks, Echols and Lowndes.

PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE:

- A hurricane watch is issued when hurricane conditions are possible in your area within 36 hours.
- A hurricane warning is issued when hurricane conditions are expected in your area within 24 hours.
- Have a family disaster plan in place that includes: a three-day supply of water, nonperishable food and bottled water; one blanket or sleeping bag and pillow per person; a first aid kit, including prescription medicines; emergency tools including a battery powered weather radio and a portable radio, flashlight and extra batteries; an extra set of car keys; a credit card or cash; and special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members.
- Learn evacuation routes and prepare an evacuation plan.
- Review your insurance policies for protection against wind and flood damage.
- Complete inventory of personal property for insurance settlements and/or tax deduction for loses. List descriptions and take pictures.
- Store important papers in waterproof containers.
- Buy items needed to board up windows and protect your home.
