Planetarium hosts final show of the season

VALDOSTA - The VSU Planetarium will present The Celestial Zoo, the final public show of the 2006-2007 season, on Friday, April 6. With two showings, at 8 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., Dr. Kenneth Rumstay, Director of the Planetarium and Observatory, will guide visitors on a tour of the celestial menagerie.

An amazing variety of zoological specimens roam the heavens. Of the eighty-eight constellations that adorn the night sky, nearly half represent animals, birds, fish, or insects. The tour will cover an entire year and offer a closer look at the animals hidden within constellations as well. The gaseous nebulae which dot the Milky Way come in all sizes and shapes, and many bear a striking resemblance to animal friends. The Horsehead Nebula in Orion, the Eagle Nebula in Serpens and the Elephant Trunk Nebula in Ophiuchus are among the most beautiful splendors of the night sky.

If weather permits, the observatory atop Nevins Hall will be open to allow guests an opportunity to view the wonders of the heavens. Seating for each show is by ticket only and is limited to 47. Tickets are available at no cost. They may be reserved in advance by calling the VSU Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences at (229) 333-5752 and picked at the door beginning at 7:30 pm on the night of the show. Limited public parking is available in front of Nevins Hall.
