New Health Promotions Office opens at VSU

Valdosta State University’s division of Student Affairs will now offer a new type of service.

Holly Wright, health educator for the newly created Health Promotions Office, will coordinate with other existing departments, such as Housing and Residence Life, Campus Recreation and the Counseling Center, to promote overall good health and wellness education for students.

“The 18 - 24 crowd believes that they are untouchable or ‘that it could happen to someone else;’ the better approach is to educate students on how to keep themselves healthy,” Dr. Kurt J. Keppler, vice president for Student Affairs, said. “I wanted a creative, proactive office driven by prevention and peer treatment to help students learn something they may not have known.”

In order to reach students, Wright will create health presentations and speak mainly to individual groups and organizations. In addition, she will also serve as a direct referral for individual students wishing to find out more about a particular subject.

“This is a new position and we are building it from the ground up, which is very exciting and challenging,” Wright said. “I want to get to know the students, faculty, and staff so that I can learn what the most pressing needs are on campus.”

Wright holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology, a master’s degree in applied sociology, and a master’s in marriage and family therapy.
