S.A.V.E. hosts Earth Day celebration in the park

NOTE: The City of Valdosta is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony during the first hour of this event to commemorate the opening of the new Azalea City Trail. The 2.7-mile multi-use trail stretches across the city from the Craig Center, through the VSU campus, to the Vallotton Youth Complex, providing a safe pedestrian route past schools, parks, recreation facilities and residential areas.

Students Against Violating the Environment (S.A.V.E.), a student activist organization at Valdosta State University, will celebrate Earth Day on Friday, April 21, 2006, at Drexel Park, from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Booths from organizations such as the Valdosta Sierra Club, Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautiful, The Georgia Forestry Department, United Nation's Children Fund (UNICEF), the Valdosta Tree Commission, Ducks Unlimited, and others, will display information on their earth-friendly products throughout the park. The event will be powered by "green energy" provided by Georgia Power that results in less air pollution and other environmental impacts, and representatives of Honda will demonstrate the earth-friendly technology of their hybrid vehicles. Food will be provided free by Hildegard's and UNICEF, and the entertainment will be provided by VSU student-led bands.

Earth Day events are being celebrated at VSU a day early this year so that S.A.V.E. can also participate in The Great American Clean-Up Day, also nationally observed on April 22, when VSU students plan to clean One-Mile Branch (the creek between the Odum Library and the Fine Arts Building).

S.A.V.E. was started by three biology majors at VSU in 1988 and was designed to help raise awareness among the student body about environmental issues on campus, in the community, and around the world. Earth Day initiative is to educate people and governments around the globe on the urgent need to take steps to controlling climate change.
