VSU celebrates its Annual Diversity Week

Valdosta State University's Office of Equal Opportunity Programs and Multicultural Affairs will host a variety of activities throughout Diversity Week, April 3-7, 2006.

Monday, April 3, 2006
VSU's Air Force ROTC and Office of Equal Opportunity Programs and Multicultural Affairs will show the Oscar award-winning movie "CRASH�An Exploration of Race in America" in the University Center's Cypress Room, 6:30-9:30 p.m. and will serve free pizza and drinks.

"Before and After: Voices of Black Teachers from Before and After Integration" will take place in the Powell Hall Auditorium, from 7-9 p.m. and will include the following presenters: Dr. Richard W. Schmertzing, Associate Professor in Educational Leadership at VSU, Dr. Lorraine P. Schmertzing, Assistant Professor in Curriculum and Instructional Technology from VSU, and Dr. Melvin A. Shelton from Albany State University. This performance is a dramatic portrayal of life in segregated and integrated public schools in Georgia from 1930 to 1970, as seen through the eyes of retired African American teachers. Material is drawn from the words of 11 teachers who were interviewed for a dissertation on the impact of race in public schools.

"Diversity in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning," will take place in the Odum Library Auditorium Room 1163, from 11 a.m. to noon. The presenter will be Dr. Yahya Mat Som, Associate Professor in Adult and Career Education from Valdosta State University. This event is co-sponsored by the VSU Diversity Counsel and the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs and Multicultural Affairs.

A Diversity Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Palms Quad. Also, from 8 to 10 p.m., the NAACP Student Organization and Black Student League Student Organizations will host a "Where in the World is Carman San Diego?" trivia event.
Friday, April 7, 2006

Artist Talk and Illusions of Reality Art Exhibit will take place at 12 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Art Gallery. Pang-Chieh Hsu will be the presenter.
