VSU plans Constitution Day celebration

The Valdosta State University community will participate in a nation-wide celebration in tribute to the U.S. Constitution on Saturday, September 17.

On September 17, 1787, the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting. Only one item of business occupied the agenda that day, to sign the Constitution of the United States of America.

President George W. Bush signed a bill on December 8, 2004 (public law 108-447) to designate every September 17th as Constitution Day. This year VSU will join in the celebration with three days of planned activities.

The Office of Student Life will kick off the celebration by sponsoring a showing of the movie National Treasure followed by a discussion on Thursday, September 15 at 9 pm in the Biology/Chemistry Building Auditorium.

The Political Science Department will sponsor a debate between two members of its faculty, Adann-Kennn Alexxandar and Lee Allen, on the Patriot Act and the Constitution on Friday, September 16, at 2 pm in West Hall room 150. The debate will be introduced by Professor Dave Winder and moderated by Professor Dick Saeger.

The VSU College Bowl team will conduct a Trivia Challenge, posing questions about the Constitution. These questions will be printed in next week's student newspaper, the Spectator, and the first completed entry will win a gift certificate to the VSU Bookstore.
