VSU Hosts Teacher Apprenticeship Workshop
Valdosta State University recently continued its efforts to keep
quality teachers in the classroom. VSU held a teacher
apprenticeship program on June 16 and 17 "is designed for high
school students who think they want to be teachers," said College
of Education Advising Center Director Maggie Roberts.
The VSU workshop held in the Education Building was for teachers
who will be teaching the Introduction to Education classes in their
high schools. Those who participated in the workshop at VSU will go
back to the high schools there they teach, and instruct those
students who are considering making teaching a profession. The
workshop is designed by the State Department of Education, Dr.
Ellen Wiley and Maggie Roberts of VSU.
High school students are selected in their junior and senior year
to participate in the program. Juniors are taken to introduction to
education classes while seniors participate in a paid
apprenticeship in the schools. Those students who complete the
program receive 144 hours of related academic instruction and 400
hours of field based experience.
Forty-five teachers from across the state participated in the
workshop at VSU. The university has held the workshop for the last
five years.
