VSU offers new mass media degree

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has authorized Valdosta State University to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in mass media.

The mass media degree is the newest program within the Communication Arts Department, which also offers degree programs in speech communication and theater.

Previously students received a degree in theater, with an emphasis in telecommunication, according to Dr. Carl Cates, department head and associate professor for Communication Arts. "We took the course in telecommunication emphasis and made it a third degree program."

The curriculum allows students to specialize in more specific tracks such as radio, television or media administration. "

This new degree allows students who are going into mass media as a career to be better served by having a diploma that matches their objectives," Cates said.
