Plumly wins in 1998 Regents Teaching Excellence Awards
A Valdosta State University educator has earned high praise from
his colleagues across the state.
Dr. Wayne Plumly, a VSU professor of marketing and economics, was
recently selected as a faculty winner in the 1998 Regents Teaching
Excellence Awards. Plumly is the winner of the faculty award for
regional and state universities within Georgia. He will be honored
at an awards ceremony in May.
A Valdosta State professor since 1980, Plumly was recognized for
his contributions to his profession, his commitment to teaching and
learning and his continuing efforts to learn and grow as a
teacher.
"As teachers, we influence so much more than we ever realize,"
Plumly said. "In the past, I taught as I was taught. I now teach
passionately with the desire to create processes that enable
students to learn for themselves both in and out of the classroom,
for that is the only way that they will truly learn."
Plumly is actively involved in the VSU community, serving as a
mentor for College of Business Administration faculty preparing
teaching portfolios; teaching the Post Secondary Option economics
course over VSU's interactive distance learning network; and
serving as a faculty adviser for VSU's chapter of Students In Free
Enterprise (SIFE).
"Wayne is a really exciting teacher," said Dr. Kenneth Stanley,
dean of VSU's College of Business Administration. "He personifies
all the attributes we associate with good and effective education.
In my mind, this is a long overdue reward for an outstanding
educator. Since VSU's primary mission involves teaching, we can all
take a special pride in the recognition of Wayne's commitment to
teaching excellence."
Plumly was also the first recipient of the College of Business
Administration Student Advisory Council Outstanding Teacher Award
in 1994.
Plumly graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1975 with
a B.A. in Economics, from Georgia State University in 1978 with a
M.A. in Economics and from GSU in 1983 with a Ph.D. in
Economics.
