VSU Foundation receives largest capital gift in its history
The Valdosta State University Foundation, Inc., recently
received the largest capital gift in university history. Johnny V.
McCranie, a Valdosta businessman, has donated the former Holiday
Markets Building on North Ashley Street to the Valdosta State
University Foundation. VSU officials value the gift at more than
$1.5 million, the largest single capital gift ever received by the
Foundation.
"I was delighted to be able to work with Johnny McCranie to make
this wonderful gift to the university, especially as we gear up to
start a major capital campaign," said Ray Devery, assistant to the
president for institutional advancement. "This gift certainly gets
us going in the right direction."
McCranie, the president of Holiday Markets, Inc., has been a
longtime supporter of charitable and community causes. Friends say
he's always had a particular interest in helping young people,
especially in educational matters.
"I recognize the importance of Valdosta State University to
Valdosta and to this region," McCranie said. "I hope that, in some
small way, this gift will help further Valdosta State's efforts
toward educating our citizens."
"We are extremely grateful for the generosity from Mr. Johnny
McCranie in making the largest, single capital gift the Valdosta
State University Foundation has ever received," said Dr. Hugh C.
Bailey, VSU president. "It will provide critically needed space in
which we can expand our programs. It also is an excellent example
of the splendid cooperative relationship that exists between the
university and the leaders of our business community in the
region."
The university's newest acquisition will be named the Johnny V.
McCranie Center, in honor of its benefactor. Officials expect its
18,600 square feet will be used for academic programs.
Also, as part of the gift, a scholarship at VSU will be established
in McCranie's name.
