At the end of the Spring semester, all non-Centennial residents are required to vacate their residence halls 24-hours after their last exam. Residents will be moved out no later than Friday, May 7th, 2021 before 10:00 pm. Students will sign up for a check-out time with a staff member in advance or can sign up for a time at their front desk, with the understanding that there may be a wait time.

There are two options for checking out of the building: Check-out by appointment and Standard Check-out.

Option 1: Priority Check out via Appointment (appointments will be from 10:00 am to 9:30 pm)

On April 16th at 3pm, you will be able to sign up for a 30-minute check-out appointment via the Housing Portal. Appointment timeslots will close 1 day prior to the appointment time listed. If you are sure of your move out time and date you can sign up for an appointment. During your appointment time a designated staff member will report to your room with your check out paperwork, to commence the checkout procedures. All personal items should be removed from your room and your room should be cleaned prior to your appointment time. If you are not ready at your appointment time, you can proceed with a standard check out.

Option 2: Standard Check-out (available daily 10:00 am to 9:30 pm)

If you are not able to sign up for an appointment 24 hours ahead of time, once you have removed all of your belongings and have cleaned your room, you may go to the front desk of your building to meet a staff member who will assist with the check-out process. The staff member will ask for your ID, check you out of our Resident Management system, collect your key, and escort you to your room to check on your room’s condition. After the Room condition inspection is complete, you are free to go. This should take no longer than 15 minutes. Please note, there could be a wait time for this process.

After-hours Check-out

Students who are unable to check-out during any of the times listed will need to call HEART at 229-253-4000. Please note that if HEART is busy assisting another student, you may need to wait a period of time for someone to be able to respond. Prior to calling HEART, all personal items should be removed from the room and the room should be cleaned.

Improper Check-outs

Students who fail to check out of their room with a staff member will be assessed a $100 improper check-out fee.

Abandoned Property

All items left behind once the residence halls are closed after Commencement on Sunday, May 9th will be considered abandoned property and either disposed of or donated. A cleaning charge of $25/hour will be assessed to the student’s account for the time it takes to pack up the items.

  • All belongings have been removed from the room – all drawers, cabinets, shelves, etc. are empty and clean (you will not have access to rooms after checking out, don’t forget anything!)
  • Leave drawers open, mattress propped up, and closets/wardrobes open
  • Remove garbage in or around the room and sweep and wipe all surfaces and floors
  • Return your assigned room key

Complete all cleaning tasks on the cleaning checklist. Room conditions will be documented at the time of your specific checkout. If the room/suite is not clean at that time, that is what will be noted. The standard room cleaning charge is $25 per hour of additional cleaning needed. Any changes to the room after the inspection has occurred will not impact the resident who has already checked out properly.

When you are checking out, please abide by all parking rules and regulations. Cars should not be left unattended for extended periods of time, or parked in prohibited unloading zones. For more information on Parking and Transportation, please visit their website.

Residents who may not be able to vacate the Residence Halls by May 7th at 10:00 pm must request to stay late. Late stay request forms can be filled out online at the following link. All forms must be submitted by Thursday, April 29th, 2021 at 5 p.m. On May 7th at 10:00 am all approved Late Stay requests will receive a Room Occupied sign on their door. Please leave this sign on your door until you have departed so staff members know the room is still occupied.

Residents who will be attending or participating in Commencement outside of Graduating Seniors, must also submit a request to stay late; however, you will be expected to checkout 24 hours after the start of Commencement, no later than Sunday, May 9th, 2021 at 7:30 pm. We encourage all graduating students and those participating in Commencement to check out prior to the Ceremony, to avoid traffic and so that you may enjoy your time with your family.

Students who are enrolled in Summer Session I (Maymester) classes will remain in the current assignments until the Summer move-over on Saturday, May 15th. Students must move to Lowndes Hall on this day. Students who are not enrolled in classes until Summer II or later will move out as

normal and can return to campus for their scheduled summer move-in date. Please see the Summer Session Information page on the Housing Website for more information.

Residents in Centennial Hall are in their current contract until July 29th, 2021 and therefore do not need to check-out during this time. Students who are planning on leaving must apply for a release of contract. Please see the Release of Contract information on the Housing Website for more information.

Current residents in Centennial Hall will have the opportunity to receive a refund of a portion of their housing charges if they decide to move out early this summer. Information on this process will be sent out by the Centennial Hall staff. Residents wishing to participate in the early move-out will need to completely remove all items from their room and return their room key in order to receive the refund. Residents that are returning for the Fall 2021 semester are eligible but will not be able to move anything into their Fall assignment until move-in week in August if choosing to participate in this option.

VSU does not have storage capabilities for students between semesters on campus. Students are encouraged to contract one of the many storage facilities in town and to consider splitting a storage unit with another student to help save on the cost
