01 / COMPUTER SCIENCE & INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Understand computing. Build what comes next.

Computer Science is the study of computation: how problems are represented, how algorithms solve them, and how software and computing systems are designed and evaluated. Students develop skills in programming, mathematical reasoning, algorithms, and software development. These foundations are valuable in their own right—and they also support advanced fields such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Computer Information Systems offers a complementary applied computing perspective, connecting software, information, and technical systems with the needs of organizations and their users. Both paths help students learn to solve problems with technology, but their curricular emphases differ.

Programming & software

Design, implement, test, and maintain programs and applications.

Algorithms & systems

Study efficient problem solving, data structures, and the behavior of computing systems.

Information & applications

Explore how computing and information systems support people, organizations, and decisions.

02 / ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AT CSET

AI is more than prompting. Learn how it works.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science concerned with building systems that recognize patterns, learn from data, make predictions, and solve problems. Machine learning, generative AI, and large language models depend on foundations in programming, algorithms, mathematics, data, and computing systems.

Using an AI tool is a starting point—not the same as understanding how it works. Computing students learn to develop software, examine how models are trained and evaluated, recognize errors and uncertainty, and consider security, reliability, and responsible use. These foundations support students who want to build, evaluate, or improve intelligent systems.

Programming & software

Create applications, implement algorithms, test code, and understand the software behind AI systems.

Algorithms & mathematics

Study problem solving, mathematical models, optimization, and the methods that enable machine learning.

Data & machine learning

Explore how models find patterns in examples, make predictions, and are evaluated on new data.

Systems & responsible AI

Consider computing infrastructure, privacy, security, bias, limitations, and trustworthy evaluation.

03 / ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY AT CSET

Make ideas work in the real world.

Engineering Technology focuses on applying engineering and scientific principles to real equipment, processes, and technical systems. Where computing students may concentrate on developing software and computational methods, Engineering Technology students focus on understanding how physical systems operate, how they can be tested, and how they can be made safer, more reliable, and more effective.

Students interested in practical engineering challenges may be drawn to manufacturing and industrial operations, measurement and instrumentation, technical design, systems integration, maintenance and troubleshooting, or quality and process improvement. These are examples of the field's applications; consult the current VSU curriculum for specific courses and requirements.

Design & technical systems

Understand components, equipment, and processes, and apply engineering reasoning to practical design and implementation challenges.

Measurement & troubleshooting

Use evidence, testing, and systematic problem-solving to understand performance and identify problems in technical systems.

Industry & process improvement

Explore how technology, quality, safety, and efficient processes come together in applied industrial and organizational settings.

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Learn it. Build it. Explain it.

Across CSET, students connect theory with practice. In computing, this may mean developing software, working with data, and testing algorithms. In Engineering Technology, it may mean analyzing equipment and processes, taking measurements, troubleshooting technical systems, and evaluating practical design choices. In every area, explaining decisions and communicating results are important. Ask about current courses, facilities, projects, and hands-on learning opportunities.
