Voice Study
Singers, majoring or minoring in music at VSU, study one-on-one in weekly lessons, plus attend weekly studio classes, which explore vocal repertoire and provide the opportunity to perform in a more intimate setting. Singers also participate in specialized workshops, master classes by notable guest artists, vocal competitions such as NATS, and national and international conferences.
If you choose to study voice at VSU, you will find yourself engaged in a supportive, encouraging, challenging and progressive environment. Unique to VSU, vocal performance majors take two one-hour lessons per week; BA music majors on the voice or education track take one one-hour lesson per week.
Undergraduate and graduate performance opportunities include choral ensembles, chamber groups, recitals, opera scene programs and fully staged productions.
Chamber Singers is the premiere choral group at VSU and performs the highest level of choral music. It is open to any VSU student by audition only.
Concert Choir is the largest vocal ensemble at VSU. It is open to all VSU students without audition. It performs regularly with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra in large choral works. In the spring of 1999 the choir traveled and performed in Hungary.
The Spotlighters specializes in vocal jazz singing. The group performs regularly both on and off campus. It sometimes performs in concert with the VSU Jazz Ensemble.
Opera Theater The VSU Opera Theater is a vital component of the vocal program at VSU and offers students the opportunity to perform in fully staged opera productions with orchestra, and opera scenes. Recent productions include workshop performances of the children's opera Alice in Wonderland and mainstage productions of Acis and Galatea, Dido and Aeneas and The Magic Flute.
