Statement from President Carvajal on Racial Injustice
June 1, 2020
Dear Blazers,
In the last few weeks, all of us have experienced first-hand our nation once again confronting and responding to the realities of racial injustice. Like many of you, I have struggled with how to properly express my feelings, while being deeply saddened and overwhelmed by what I have seen.
During these difficult days, I found myself drawn back to the principles of our Blazer Creed, and the meaning of each precept. Our aspiration for civility – showing compassion as well as respect for the dignity of every person. Our aspiration for integrity – being responsible for our own actions and the compassion and respect we show to others. Finally, our aspiration for citizenship – having a vested interest in the well-being of our entire community as we, together, pursue ways to make positive contributions where we can and support those who need our help the most. This Creed reminds us of our joint commitment to create an environment where all are treated equitably, where people do not fear for their own safety because of the color of their skin, and where all are invited to rise to new heights and achieve their fullest potential.
Physical distance from each other and not being on campus make it more difficult to come together to support one another. However, during these difficult times, I urge us all to stay united as a community and to support one another. Reach out to your professors, classmates, colleagues, friends, and mentors, and if you are feeling overwhelmed, please connect with our Counseling Services on their web page.
As we grieve for the innocent and work for a better tomorrow, may all of us who make up Blazer Nation resolve to do our part every day to create a better world – a world that consistently shows compassion and respect for the dignity for every human being.
Dr. Richard Carvajal
President
