Subregion Science Bowl Returns to VSU Jan. 31

VALDOSTA — Forty-five high school students are set to compete in rigorous tests of scientific and mathematical knowledge when Valdosta State University hosts the 24th annual Subregion Science Bowl from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 31, in the Hugh C. Bailey Science Center.

Student teams from Appling County High School, Bainbridge High School, Lowndes High School, and Valdosta High School will compete against each other in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics, energy, earth science, space science, and math.

Teams will compete two at a time in 20-minute rounds using a quiz-show style system to “buzz in” with the correct answer to earn points. If the team answers correctly, a bonus question will be provided for extra points.

First- and second-place winners will advance to the State Science Bowl, which will be held on Feb. 28 at Armstrong State University in Savannah. State winners will advance to the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC, April 30-May 4.

The Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. Approximately 240,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl throughout its 24-year history, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions. It is open to middle and high school students.
