President McKinney named to Georgia Council on Economic Education

VALDOSTA -- Dr. William J. McKinney, president of Valdosta State University, has been named to the Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE) Board of Trustees. The board’s executive committee selected McKinney, who will serve a three-year term, during its September meeting. McKinney is one of six new board members from institutions of higher education represented on the board.

The Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE) helps teachers teach economics through workshops, classroom materials, and programs like the Stock Market Game and the award-winning Georgia Economic History Project. The GCEE helps prepare students for their economic roles as workers, consumers, citizens, and lifelong decision-makers in today’s global society.

"Valdosta State University is committed to educating responsible citizens in an increasingly complex global society,” said McKinney. “Economic education is a vital part of that mission. I believe that my appointment represents an affirmation of the great work done in economic education here at VSU."

The Valdosta State’s Center for Economic Education (VSU-CEE) is one of 12 university-based centers throughout Georgia and is administered locally within the Dewar College of Education.

According to Dr. Cindy Prater, co-director of VSU-CEE, workshops are offered for teachers at different grade levels and include resources in both macro and microeconomics, the stock market, international economics, and personal finance. This spring a new workshop titled “Using Biographies of Great Americans to Teach Economics” will be offered to first, second, and third grade teachers.
