Toe-Tapping 'Footloose' Bursts Onto VSU Stage
VALDOSTA - VSU Theater and Dance presents the high-energy
musical drama "Footloose" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday,
April 16-18, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, in the Fine Arts
Building's Sawyer Theater.
“For a fast paced entertaining musical that makes you want to jump
on stage, come see 'Footloose,'" said the show's director and
choreographer, Eric Nielsen, a professor of communication arts and
head of the dance area. "It has famous songs of the '80s,
outstanding performances by VSU students, show stopping
choreography, and a story that captures the hearts of young and
old.”
The Oscar and Tony-nominated show based on the 1984 movie of the
same name tells the story of Ren McCormack, an independent teenager
from the city, who moves to a small town that has banned dancing
and rock music. McCormack clashes with the town's spiritual leader,
Reverend Shawn Moore, who has embraced restrictive values in
response to the tragic loss of his teenage son. Emotions erupt when
McCormack rallies his peers to lobby for a senior prom - an action
that forces the town to confront its fears and find common
ground.
