About this field

Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary minor focusing on how human systems have impacted the natural world. Our program draws from a variety of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that provide students with a wide range of perspectives on environmental issues. These issues are becoming a focus in public and private sectors.

The Valdosta State Difference

Our program is unique in its broadly interdisciplinary nature, using content and methodology from a variety of fields of inquiry. Students may elect to focus on the humanities and social sciences, or on the natural sciences, allowing them to adjust how the program complements their major field of study. At the same time, they are exposed to a wide range of topics and approaches within Environmental Studies, which enables them to appreciate the full impact and implications of human activity on the natural world.

What You'll Learn

The student will learn to analyze core issues and topics of the natural environment and how those have changed through time; explore the interdisciplinary relationship among the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences with regard to the study of the environment; and engage in independent critical research of the natural environment in its relationship to humanity.
