VSU Debate Wins Three Awards at Morehouse College Event

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team earned three awards at the third annual King Classic hosted by Morehouse College Sept. 23-24 in Atlanta.
 
The King Classic featured parliamentary debates sanctioned by the National Parliamentary Debate Association, which sponsors two-on-two debate. Ten colleges and universities from five states competed at the event, which featured varsity/open, junior varsity, and novice debaters.
 
VSU’s Musiteli (Amoo) Mubuso of Lusaka, Zambia, earned a fourth place speaker award in the varsity/open division. He anticipates graduating in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in communication. His teammate, Haley Vinson of Saint Mary’s, Georgia, earned a ninth place speaker award in the varsity/open division. She anticipates graduating in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Education in early childhood education.
 
As a team, Mubuso and Vinson earned a semifinalist award in the varsity/open division.
 
Also representing the VSU Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team at the King Classic were Kelsey Townsend of Stockbridge, Georgia; Darien Hector of Douglasville, Georgia; Cory Howard of Valdosta, Georgia; Olivia Cote of Fayetteville, Georgia; Travis Edwards of Ellenwood, Georgia; Nathalie Jaimes of Jasper, Georgia; and Shanta Johnson of Ludowici, Georgia.
 
The VSU Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team will continue its competitive season at the University of Southern Mississippi later this month and at the University of Oklahoma in November.
 
The VSU Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team is open to all majors on campus and does not require previous experience. The team competes in regional and national level competitions and participates in parliamentary debate as well as individual events, including impromptu speaking, extemporaneous speaking, informative speaking, persuasion, dramatic interpretation, dramatic duo, poetry interpretation, and more.
