VSU Offers After-School Enrichment Opportunities for Kids

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University is offering after-school enrichment opportunities for community boys and girls in the elementary grades through its Regional Center for Continuing Education. Classes start Tuesday, Sept. 6, and run through mid-November.

Camp Discovery: After-School Edition is an outgrowth of Camp Discovery, an annual summer day camp program offered through VSU Continuing Education that provides enrichment opportunities for area children and teenagers. The first after-school classes were offered during the 2015 spring semester.

“The response to this service has been great,” said Suzanne Ewing, program coordinator with VSU Continuing Education. “We are very excited to once again offer this after-school enrichment opportunity and hope it continues to meet the needs of the community.”

The Camp Discovery: After-School Edition lineup features the following classes:

• Crafty Kids After School: This class is for boys and girls in kindergarten through third grade who want to make new friends while they get creative and learn about painting, drawing, crafts, and more. It will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning Sept. 6. Tuition is $69.

• Crazy Science After School: This class is for boys and girls in kindergarten through third grade who want to look at the world through the eyes of a scientist as they learn some basic principles of biology, chemistry, physics, natural sciences, and engineering. It will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on four consecutive Thursdays beginning Sept. 15. Tuition is $69.

• Fun With Spanish After School: This class is for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade who want to have fun learning a new language with arts and crafts, games, and music. It will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on eight Thursdays, specifically Sept. 15, 22, 29; Oct. 6, 13, 27; and Nov. 3, 10. Please note that this class will not meet on Oct. 20. Tuition is $129.

Each enrichment opportunity features lots of hands-on activities. A small snack will be served each day.

Discounts are available for children of VSU faculty, staff, and students.

Transportation is not provided from area schools. Parents must drop off and sign out their children each day.

The Regional Center for Continuing Education is located at 903 N. Patterson St. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life in the region by providing educational, artistic, cultural, technological, and economic development activities and programs. It works to develop and present programs and activities for professional and personal enrichment of community persons.
