VALDOSTA – Ashlie Prain is a recipient of Valdosta State University’s 2016 American Association of University Women Award.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award,” said the junior sociology and anthropology major from Valdosta. “Thank you to my brilliant professors for their support and inspiration, always. I can only hope to one day inspire students the way you have inspired me.”

The American Association of University Women Award is presented to a female student with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.5 who has demonstrated talents for intellectual growth and leadership through her involvement in clubs, organizations, projects, and/or work experience throughout their time at VSU.

As a student at VSU, Prain was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta and Phi Sigma Tau. She currently serves as president of the Anthropology Club, secretary of the Sociology Club, and a member of Students Against Violating the Environment.

A regular on the Dean’s List, Prain received numerous honors and awards, including the Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Criminal Justice Academic Excellence Award, the Literacy Volunteer Program of South Georgia Inc. President’s Award, and was a prize winner for the 2016 Franz Boas Award for Excellence in Ethnographic Writing. She was also selected by faculty, staff, and administrators to represent the university in the 2015-2016 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Prain is currently looking into the Doctor of Philosophy in anthropology graduate program at the University of Florida’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

“I hope to have a career in activism and nonprofits working for animal rights, combating all systems of oppression, and to teach college students,” said the daughter of Michelle and Jimmy Bean.
